SCIENCE ACADEMY OF TSUKUBA
Purpose of Establishment

The 20th Century can be characterized as the period of development during which science and technologies based on science as well as high-tech industries using such technologies have achieved outstanding development. As a result, the quality of our life remarkably improved, with the development in the economy, infrastructure construction, environmental conservation, adequate supply of heath and medical services, offerings of entertainment, advancement of information technology, and protection from natural and human disasters.

On the other hand, the civilization supported by the 20th centuryユs science and technology significantly affected the natural world by causing various environmental problems that threaten the life of different living things including humans. Moreover, the development brought serious problems we have never experienced before, such as depletion of natural resources, population explosion in developing countries, and arrival of the aged society in many of advanced countries.

Although in the scientific and technological world, R&D has been separately promoted in each area of discipline, the necessity of collaboration between different fields has been increasing in importance as a means for solving the problems we now face. New frontiers will be exploited through cross-fertilization with other disciplines and multidisciplinary approaches are required to cope with various problems resulting from the scientific civilization in the 20th century. While private institutes will be required to use their research results more effectively than ever, universities and national institutes have to contribute to achieving scientific advancement by creating novel knowledge as well as working on how to use the knowledge created, supporting private enterprise, and creating venture businesses.

Science Frontier Tsukuba (SFT) 999 as a milestone to achieve these goals was held from the 17th to the 19th of November 999 at the Tsukuba International Congress Center. On its final day, the メTsukuba Declarationモ was delivered and the proposal to establish the メScience Academy of Tsukubaモ to develop the results of SFT1999 was adopted.

Based on this Declaration, the Science Academy of Tsukuba (SAT) will be founded to exploit a new millennium, create new scientific and technological visions, and serve as a place for dynamic research activities based on such visions, mutual exchanges, and social activities among researchers.

Main Activities:
(1) The Academy will promote active opinion exchanges among researchers in different fields to build an international and domestic network and create pioneering study realms, while having researchers in Ibaraki, including Tsukba, as its core members.
(2) The Academy will work to nuture students as well as ordinary citizens in the society through educating young people so that they become fascinated by science and by broadening the stratum of citizens who are interested in, and enjoy, science, while striving to respond to the demands of society.
(3) The Academy will function as a coordinating organization where universities and research institutes collaborate with each other and expand their work in cooperation to actively promote the utilization of their research results and technology transfer.

Through these activities, we wish not only to offer visions of how science and technology should be used in the new century, but also to contribute to promoting healthy social advancement through the utilization of science and technology.

Looking back, history has always taught us that more individual effort, not group power, is required to drive new developments and exploit the new world, and to foster creative, pioneering, and cutting-edge R&D. I trust that establishing メthe individual cultureモ here in Tsukuba means cultivating an environment where each individual can exert oneユs creative power to capacity.

We wish to strongly urge your participation in メScience Academy of Tsukubaモ by explaining our purpose of establishment.
